Objective | The Confluence programme is the first French participation in the WOCE-South Atlantic programme. It focuses on studying the boundary region of the South Atlantic at the confluence between the Brazil Current and the Malvinas Current. The three pre-WOCE pilot cruises for Confluence made it possible to acquire the first time series of direct current measurements in this region, obtain 3 fine-scale hydrology networks using tracers in 3 different seasons, to get the four-country cooperation (France, USA and the neighbouring countries of Argentina and Uruguay) up and running and to set up the infrastructure for the actual WOCE phase. The Confluence 3 cruise which took place aboard RV Suroît in February 1990 was the last cruise in this pre-WOCE phase. |
