Objective	Observation of hydrological structures at 165 E between 20 S and 10 N, studying the interannual variability of this structure, in relation to the El Nino phenomenon. Estimating transport of water masses (65 E), by directly measuring the current and performing geostrophic calculations. Studying the wind's action on ocean surface layers (0-500 m) from instrumented buoys moored between 5 S and 8 N. Studying surface circulation and its contribution to the heat budget by deploying drifting buoys with string of thermistors. Two legs were followed for these studies: 169 E (3 S-4 N) and 165 E (20 S-8 N).

Summary of measurements

-51 temperature, salinity and oxygen profiles from 0 to 1,000 m, 59 current profiles (speed, direction) from 0 to 600 m.
-51 profiles for chlorophyll, nitrates, phosphates, from 0 to 180 m, 41 vertical hauls (500 m / surface) for zooplankton; 2 vertical hauls (200 m / surface) for microzooplankton.
-65 XBT shots.
-4 in situ measurements of photosynthetic carbon fixation.
-Meteorological observations during entire cruise.
-Retrieving and mooring Atlas buoy at 8 N; Replacing Atlas buoys at 2 S and at 5 S (wind, T from 0 to 500 m); Deploying 15 drifting buoys with thermistor string.
-Recording FURUNO Doppler profiles approximately every hour, from 9 Dec.1989 on.
-10 days of continuous measurements (sampling: 10 minutes) of temperature, surface salinity using Micro Applied System mini-probe and 15 days with sampling every 5 minutes.
