Objective Studying the evolution of sediments and benthic fauna depending on bathymetry, underwater topography and distance from coasts. BIOGEOCAL, a combined geological and biological cruise, extends and supplements the BIOCAL 85 cruise. Three sectors were studied (bathymetric segment from 300 to 3,200 metres): 1) the margins of New Caledonia and Norfolk Ridge (on locations of 4 Seabeam "boxes" mapped in 1985); 2) the sill between Ouvea and Lifou; 3) the Thio-Lifou transect.
