Objective	Assessment of abundance indexes by age for the seven main commercial species of gadoid and clupeidae fish in the North Sea (herring, sprat, mackerel, cod, haddock, whiting, Norwegian pout). These indexes make it possible to estimate recruitment values for these species (i.e., the number of individuals born in 1986). These values are essential for beginning the computations implemented to establish structural stock assessment models. Eight countries take part in this programme, joined by France in 1976.
