Objective | The LATEX project (Lagrangian Transport EXperiment, P.I. A. Petrenko, F. Diaz) aimed to study the role of combined physical and biogeochemical dynamics on the (sub) mesoscale in exchanges of matter and energy between inshore and offshore zones using the Gulf of Lion as a study area. LATEX08 is a preliminary project preceding the LATEX project (2009-2010) which focuses on increasing our knowledge about (sub)meso-scale processes observed in the Gulf of Lion by analyzing satellite data and data acquired in situ, as well as with hydrodynamic model outputs. Analyzing the different types of data will enable an eddy or a filament with a number of given features (life span > 10 days and a low or medium stretching rate) within a stratified physical environment (mixed zone of about 50m). In practical terms for Latex01: locating an eddy using in situ measurements made by the following instruments: shipboard ADCP, TSG and fluorimeter aboard RV Téthys II and satellites images received by e-mail; CTD stations (locations not determined, inside the eddy which was located in the western zone of the Gulf of Lion, north of 42°29' North; west of 4° East) to map the biogeochemistry (Chl, suspended matter, nutrients) for validation of the combined physical-biogeochemical model (Symphonie-Eco3M) and deployment and recovery of GPS/Argos Lagrangian buoys. |
