Objective | The 5°S-10°S band in the Indian Ocean is characterized by a thermocline near the surface, linked to the mean wind structure. This near-surface thermocline makes the ocean highly reactive to atmospheric solicitations and results in marked variability on inter-seasonal (Madden-Julian oscillation) and inter-annual (Indian Ocean dipole). Moreover, these two phenomena influence the origin of cyclones in the area and affect the number of cyclones that may strike Madagascar or Reunion Island. This region has been acknowledged as being of prime interest by CLIVAR's Indian Ocean Panel. Long time series are needed to characterize variability on these time scales, which is why an ATLAS mooring was deployed during the Cirène cruise in early 2007, in the framework of international effort to develop a mooring array in the Indian Ocean. The cruise took advantage of RV Marion Dufresne's transit in August 2008 to carry out maintenance on this mooring. This falls under the Cirène project. |
