Objective

In the frame of the International Polar Year (IPY), BONUS-GOODHOPE's general objective was to help understand interactions between ocean dynamics, circulation, biogeochemistry and geochemistry in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, where Indo-Atlantic exchanges and those with the South African continental margin take place. This multidisciplinary project gathers physicists, bio- and geo-chemists and modellers: by coupling i) the ocean dynamics with ii) the biogeochemistry in the water column, the atmosphere and the sediment, with iii) study of trace elements and isotopes which act as tracers for lithogenic sources, circulation and ventilation of water masses and of biogeochemical processes, and which also make it possible to quantify particulate fluxes exported from the surface towards deep water, and with iv) the development of models which include large scale and regional scale configurations, idealized and biogeochemical models, and simulations of trace elements and isotopes; the project will supply significant advances in understanding the physical, chemical and biological processes put into play on the scale of the Southern Ocean and of the climate. The project was approved by the International Scientific Committee ICSU/WMO of API (EoI#584), and also appears in 3 key API clusters (CASO ID#132, GEOTRACES ID#269,ICED ID#417). It has significant interaction with the IPY ZERO&DRAKE (EoI#880) project, a GEOTRACES & CASO type study along the 0°E meridian in the Southern Atlantic (the southernmost part of our leg) and in Drake's passage, aboard the German vessel RV POLARSTERN (ANT-XXIV/3 mission, Mission leader: E. Fahrbach). This interaction will back up the planned physical oceanography studies. Its objectives fall within the framework of international programmes (GEOTRACES (SCOR), IMBER (IGBP/SCOR) and CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR-Southern Ocean and the INSU LEFE project.
