Objective | The Terrasse cruise had three main objectives: (i) to explore the bathyal fauna diversity on seamounts on the Loyalty Islands ridge (CenSeam) and add to sample collections which can be used with molecular biology techniques in the frame of the international Barcode of Life and Tree of life programmes (more specifically MarBol and Cnidarian Tree of Life); (ii) supplement the sampling for projects underway on population genetics in gastropods and yeti crabs on seamounts; (iii) take sponge samples for a project on adaptation in deep environments. The cruise aimed to set up sampling which would enable the analysis of firstly the origin of the diversity of the fauna associated with seamounts, secondly, the connectivity of patchy populations in the deep sea environment and thirdly the evolutionary constraints related to this environment. Samples were taken as planned, using a beam trawl and a dredge. Specimens were fixed in alcohol or formaldehyde or frozen in liquid nitrogen, depending on how they were to be used on land. This cruise was associated with the CenSEam and Marbol projects. |
