Objective The CLIPPERTON cruise was carried out in the framework of a Franco-American cooperation for the study of oceanic hydrothermal phenomena; the unique aim of the work was to understand magnetism and hydrothermal processes on a segment of a fast ridge: 1) Highlighting the hydrothermal process on the selected ridge segment by its known manifestations: fluids, massive sulphide deposits, metalliferous sediments, anomalies in the concentrations of certain elements in seawater, biochemistry. 2) Define and prepare a study area for the phenomenon by submersible dives planned in 1982.
