Objective

Measuring the 'water colour' in situ in the South/South-west lagoons of New Caledonia. Establishing and validating an algorithm to detect surface chlorophyll for MODIS/MeRiS sensors. Validating a biogeochemical model (Eco3M) combined with a circulation model that predicts surface chlorophyll distribution with respect to prevailing winds and precipitation. The novelty of the approach lay in sampling a regular network of stations where reflectance linked to the optical properties of the water column were either influenced by the different types of seabed (south and south-west lagoon waters with seagrass beds, corals, sand, etc.) or independent of the seabed (ocean). One of the strong points of the cruise was the availability of a wide range of complementary optical instruments (Hydroscat-6, Ultrapath, ac9, Trios, PSICAM, transmissometer, fluorimeter), that are sufficiently sensitive for oligotrophic areas. Measurements were taken for 1) the inherent (absorption, backscatter) and apparent (reflectance) properties of water, 2) more classic parameters of T°, S (CTD profile), pigment (chlorophylls, phycoerythrins, carotenoids) and nutrient(NO3, PO4, SiO4, NH4) concentrations at a depth of 3 m (as well as dry weight and particulate organic carbon) and at the bottom. In addition, presence at 3 set points for 24 h with hourly sampling aimed to study the variability of physical, optical, chemical and biological characteristics during the day. This study could also enable phytoplankton growth to be estimated using a simple growth-grazing model. Measurements of the optical properties of Trichodesmium collected by net and current measurements (ADCP) completed the sampling.
