Objective The objective of the series of ECLAIR cruises (from March to August 2008) was to temporally monitor the plankton ecosystem in the Gironde river plume, a crucial habitat for the Bay of Biscay anchovy population's viability. These cruises cover the entire season of development, specifying the physical and trophic (phyto- and zooplankton) environment as well as the vertical distribution of eggs and larvae. All these elements are determining factors in better assessing larval survival and finally, recruitment of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay. This initial ECLAIR cruise (March 2008) supplied elements about hydrological conditions in late winter before the anchovy spawning season. It is related to the STRADA (Stratégie Adaptative des populations) project in the DEMOSTEM programme.
