Objective | This sea cruise followed that of May 2007 conducted aboard RV TETHYS II and falls within the ANR POTES (2005-2008, with the marine cluster label) project framework. The latter focuses on the role marine microorganisms play in the mineralization of organic matter in meso- and bathy-pelagic zones. This cruise is also part of the ANTARES (Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch) project, which is why the ANTARES zone (42°48 N, 6°10 E) was chosen as a study site. But since the marine prefecture authority refused us access to the sector 11 ZONEX corresponding to the ANTARES station, the DYFAMED station (43°25N, 07°51E) was sampled. A dual approach based on in vitro experiments and in situ studies was envisaged to address the effect of hydrostatic pressure on prokaryotes and their activity of transformation and de mineralization of organic matter (OM). The collected data should enable the results obtained in the POTESmer 2007 cruise to be validated and determine and quantify the effects of increased hydrostatic pressure on: - processes of organic matter mineralization and regeneration of biogenic elements in intermediate and deep water; - the structural (biodiversity) and functional dynamics of prokarotic communities; - POM fluxes in the water column as well as the speed at which these particles are transformed in the mesopelagic layer. This information will be fed into a model describing the transformation of particles by microorganisms in the entire ocean water column. This falls under the ANR POTES project (ANR-05-BLAN-0161-01). |
