Objective | The objectives of the cruise were to study the water mass distribution and circulation in the western part of the subpolar North Atlantic (Labrador and Irminger Seas) and to infer water mass formation rates. Special focus was on investigating the different components of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Particularly its lightest contribution, called Labrador Sea Water (LSW) was considered. Spreading pathways and respective water mass properties in the western basins of the subpolar North were analyzed by measuring standard hydrographic parameters, anthropogenic tracers such as chlorofluorocarbon and sulphurhexafluoride, as well as components related to the oceanic carbon system. Further objectives were related to the determination of the air-sea CO2 gas exchange, and the determination of the storage of anthropogenic carbon in the subpolar North Atlantic. A multidisciplinary mooring installed in the central Irminger Sea and being part of the Atlantic Network of Interdisciplinary Moorings and Time-series for Europe (ANIMATE) was successfully recovered and redeployed. Additionally, six profiling APEX-floats were deployed within the framework of the international Argo programme(four in the Labrador Sea, two in the Iceland Basin). Name of the project :"Verbundvorhaben Nordatlantik", Work Package AP 2.1 / Coordinating body: Universität Bremen, Germany. |
