Objective | Cruise on hydrology, geochemistry, ADCP, PROVOR, XBT, SVP-B, VMP. Every two years since 2002, we have repeated a hydrological section with a hundred stations between Portugal and the southernmost tip of Greenland, to determine the low frequency fluctuations of the meridian cell of ocean circulation, heat and tracer transport and water mass characteristics. The 2002, 2004 and 2006 sections had already shown high variability in these properties and have now been complemented by the 2008 section. Observations noted in 2008 included: temperature and conductivity measurements with a CTDO2 probe (108 stations), current measurements taken using Doppler acoustic current meters (VM-ADCP underway and + 108 L-ADCP stations), microstructure measurements which could quantify the mixing of water masses (30 stations), determination of concentrations of nutrients and anthropogenic tracers (CFCs, CCl4, anthropogenic carbon), determination of pH, pCO2 and alkalinity. In addition, there was deployment of: 18 floats (international ARGO programme) drifting around 1000 m in depth with the currents and supplying a temperature and salinity profile from 2000 m to the surface every 10 days. These included floats fitted with oxygen sensors(PROVOR-DO) and 2 floats fitted with bio-optical sensors (PROVBIO A & B); 8 drifting buoys supplying sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure observations for the world meteorological observation network (3 of them deployed on the return trip); 3 temperature-salinity buoys designed to facilitate the calibration of the SMOS satellite which measures ocean surface salinity (2 metocean, 1 Pacific Gyre) amongst other parameters; 1 bouy with a thermistor (Marlin-Yug); 53 expendable temperature probes (XBT T7) on the return trip. This falls under the OVIDE project. |
