Objective | The SIGOLO cruise aimed to perform a highly detailed bathymetric and seismic survey of part of the subsea sedimentary structure of Le Golo, emphasizing high resolution and profile density; particularly in areas where we know that that deposit variability occurs very rapidly and where erosion is quite frequent. In addition, this is a rather singular zone worldwide, where shelf-basin correlations can be drawn with very good continuity of seismic reflectors. The new survey targeted exploration of the entire sedimentary system from the edge of the current delta to the bottom of the basin. It involved acquiring data which could establish the lithology and the detailed geometry of sedimentary bodies; defining in detail the facies distribution in order to determine the mechanisms of the sedimentary process; accurately determining the Quaternary stratigraphy in order to study the temporal evolution of the detrital structures as well as the processes behind their edification; exploring the factors and the parameters that influence the morphology and the facies of submarine fans; constructing a model of the distribution of ¿sand bodies¿ within these types of submarine fans or sedimentary bodies. All objectives were met. The planned seismic profiles were performed. The related project is "Risks of underwater slides, slips and avalanches, turbidity and seismic hazards". |
