Objective | The BBMOMAR2 mission was made up of four interconnected seismological experiments: 1. A 1-year study of seismic events in the Lucky Strike volcano using an array of 5 instruments set 4.5 km apart in seismic network (deployment in 2007 and recovery in 2008) 2. A 1-year seismic study highlighting the hydrothermal site around the volcano. 3. A 3-year deployment of a marine broadband seismometer near the centre of the Lucky Strike segment, in order to study the mantle structure under the site and determine the background noise and high throughput variations for the marine sites (2007 - 2010). 4. A 1-year study of the background noise using a broadband seismometer, including deployment of a second broadband seismometer on the shelf between the Azores Lucky Strike and Ponta Delgada, each along with a current-meter set at a depth of 10 metres. Except for one short-period OBS lost in Indonesia in July, all the devices were replaced. So, these were not redeployments, but new devices put in place. The BBMOMAR 2 mission was to recover 6 seismometers and 2 current meters, deploy 5 seismometers (including one broadband) and deploy 12 Portuguese OBSS around the volcano and the Menez Hom. The 12 Portuguese OBSS will be recovered in November/December of this year and the 5 others next summer, at which time another broadband OBSS will be deployed for another year. CTD casts were performed for 4 nights to supplement a data course on mixing of processes and the rate of renewal for deep water. |
