Objective

The BOUM project is based on 3 main objectives, involving collaborative work by physicists, biologists and biogeochemists whose specialities range from marine optics to modelling. The aim is to better represent the interactions between plankton and biogenous element cycles (C,N,P,Si,Fe) at scales ranging from process study to study of the Mediterranean. Objective 1: Provide a longitudinal description of biogeochemistry and biological diversity in the Mediterranean Sea during the maximum stratification period; Objective 2: Study production and fate of organic matter in 3 contrasting oligotrophic environments, particularly emphasizing the study of processes leading to divergences in the stoechiometric ratios of biogenous elements in organic matter, in the surrounding water or in exported material; Objective 3: Obtain a satisfactory representation of the main biogeochemical flows(C,N,P,Si)and the dynamics of the plankton food web, in situ and for experiments in microcosms. The cruise falls under the framework of the national LEFE programme under the CYBER action and the European SESAME programme.
