Objective The BIOGAS VIII cruise is part of an overall programme initiated in 1972 to describe abyssal benthic populations in the Bay of Biscay and, since 1978 (BIOGAS VII), to study their functioning. 2 main objectives already outlined during previous cruises (BIOVEMA, BIOGAS VII, WALVIS): 1) Estimation in terms of energy of the various components of the trophic network within the "deep benthos" compartment and their relationship with the organic matter available at the water/sediment interface. 2) Carnivores/scavengers scale: estimation of the predation pressure on the benthos, i.e. initially, an attempt to quantify the populations.
