Objective The INterCALibration cruise program (INCAL) was designed following a series of cruises to study abyssal benthic communities: The development of modern technology in terms of sampling equipment for benthic organisms, the appearance of new equipment and the disparities existing between the quantitative and semi-quantitative results published by various authors on abyssal benthic fauna led to the consideration of an intercalibration cruise aimed at comparing the efficiency and selectivity of different sampling equipment and various working methods on the same series of stations.
