Objective | The ENVAR 6 cruise planned for 20 to 27 August 2007 aboard R/V Téthys follows on from the ENVAR 1 to 5 cruises which set up various moorings and undertook core sampling at different times of year. This main objective of this new cruise was to sample fauna and sediment using two different types of corer along the Var canyon, in accordance with the appropriate strategy developed in the IFREMER-DEEP (Deep environment) and GM (Marine geoscience) departments. Five study sites were proposed. They were selected to cover the entire canyon system. Three sites are located in the upstream section: the first two are respectively at the mouths of the Var and Paillon rivers at a depth of 1,200 m and the third at the confluence of the Var and Paillon canyons (1,750 m). These sites will enable outflow of matter from the two rivers to be monitored. Two others are located at the foot of the slope in the Var valley (2,250 m). One is positioned in the valley and the other on the levee. This is a zone for major transfer and overflow of matter fluxes to a deep zone. The last site is found at the opening of the canyon on the DYFAMED station where the lobe of spreading of matter channelled by the canyon begins. The ENVAR cruises are multidisciplinary (biology, physics and geochemistry) and should provide better understanding of the dynamics and frequency of energy inputs channelled by the Var canyon, as well as their sources and consequences on the development of the surrounding benthic organisms. This falls under the European HERMES program. |
