Objective

This cruise was part of the ANR POTES programme led by Christian TAMBURINI, aiming to characterize the effects of increased hydrostatic pressure on: -processes of organic matter's mineralization and regeneration of biogenic elements in intermediate and deep water; -and structural (biodiversity) and functional (activities) dynamics in prokaryotic communities; - POM fluxes in the water column as well as the speed at which these particles are transformed in the mesopelagic layer. This information will be fed into a model describing the transformation of particles by microorganisms in the entire ocean water column. A number of technological developments were made to meet these objectives. The POTES Mer cruise was mainly designed to test them in situ (new instruments and new analysis protocols). This cruise fell under the ANR POTES programme which has received the marine cluster label awarded by the PACA competitiveness cluster.
