Objective | Between late April and early August 2005, oysters and mussels in the Arcachon basin were contaminated by a mix of toxins (especially spirolids and okadaic acid) which entailed a long closure period for the marketing of these shellfish. The general objectives of the study concerned 2 additional points related to environmental management (Arcachon basin): - early detection of toxic algal blooms (prevention / alert); - the source and their penetration in the Arcachon basin going towards shellfish farming areas (prevention / zones of refuge). In this ecosystem, the data from the REPHY Arcachon monitoring network enable us to hypothesize that these algae originate from outside of the Basin, although we do not know the determinism behind their accumulation. Therefore, the cruises specifically aimed to check the above mentioned hypothesis and acquire local knowledge about the ecology of the algae (Dinophysis) involved as linked to the characteristics of the environment (Arcachon basin and nearby continental shelf: characterizing the conditions that promote the accumulation of Dinophysis, the possible role played by stratifications and/or any eddy-type hydrodynamic structures). The cruise took place in 5 2-day missions: It is part of the PNEC's Atlantic coast project. |
