Objective | The ERODER project, acronym for erosion and dismantling of the volcanic edifice of Reunion island, focuses on the study of volcanic edifice dismantling processes, the roles respectively played by flank destabilizations and erosion, as well as the transport dynamics of matter on the flanks of the volcanic edifice. The objectives are to better understand 1) the geological structure of this volcanic island and its evolution over time; 2) the dynamics of transfer processes of matter towards the open sea. The ERODER2 cruise objectives were to perform bathymetric surveys and higher resolution imaging than the EM12 surveys made during the FOREVER cruise on the Cilaos turbiditic system and its counterparts, sample the various sedimentary bodies identified since 2006 with a 10-15 m piston corer, to finish mapping certain seamounts and sample them using dredges and to extend the survey southward and towards the fossil ocean ridge in the Mascarene basin. |
