Objective | Considering its size and potential importance, the ocean is surprisingly poorly characterized in terms of organic gases that play important roles in global atmospheric chemistry. In this project we aim to characterize the nature of organic trace species, in particular organic oxygenates, and the rate of emissions from marine biology. The oxidation of these compounds in air is directly linked to the global ozone budget while the oxidation pathways in seawater are largely unknown. Two shipboard research cruises were performed to assess both emission and uptake in the open ocean. Based on the laboratory and field measurements an interactive atmosphere-ocean chemistry model will be developed, from basic to global Earth system simulations. The Southern Hemisphere organic measurements are focused on areas of 1) low anthropogenic influence, and 2) contrasting oceanic regions (subtropical, temperate, austral, polar waters) with corresponding contrasting meteorological conditions (e.g. wind speed driven processes) and corresponding contrasting oceanic biogenic emissions (subtropical / Sub-Antarctic / polar oceanic fronts). For this reason, during the cruise a fast-response sector-control is needed for all measurements to avoid interception of sporadic pollution from the ship itself. This can be provided by either the sonic system or via a duct-valve system controlled by a CPC and computer, with a continuous record of the status of the system for data processing and evaluation. European project: OOMPH. Cruise divided in two parts: *VT 88/OOMPH-1: from 19/01/2007 to 05/02/2007 (18 days at sea) from Cape Town (South Africa)to Punta Arenas (Chile). *MD 160/OOMPH: from 01/03/2007 to 25/03/2007 (24 days at sea) from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Reunion island. |
