Objective In the framework of the Merlumed action theme of the PIM Integrated Mediterranean project (PIM), the PNEC French national coastal ecology programme (PNEC), the Languedoc-Roussillon region's SYSCOLAG coastal and lagoon system programme and ANR ECCO, the TECPEC cruises aimed to perfect fishing gear which would enable difference sizes of hake and its prey to be caught over its entire distribution area in the Gulf of Lion. The last cruise to be run in the framework of this action aimed to complete the testing of the Mermed trawl which had begun during the TECPEC3 cruise in October 2003 and the TECPEC4 cruised in October 2004 and which had not been achieved earlier. This four-seam bottom trawl is equipped with a horizontal separating layer placed at the middle of the side seams, dividing the trawl into two equal parts along its entire length. It can thus indicate any different behaviour with respect to hake's bathymetric distribution depending on age classes. New bunts were tested in 2004. They provided better filtering and facilitated the fish's movement toward the cod ends. A new separation with small mesh preventing the fish from going from one floor to the other in the body of the trawl was also installed. The EROC video system made it possible to verify the good operability of the trawl while fishing. The main challenge of this cruise was to assess fish behaviour with respect to the trawl in zones from 0-5 m and 5-10 m above the seabed, by the catches obtained in each of the two bunts. This is related to the Integrated Mediterranean project (PIM-MEDICIS).
