Objective The MOUNDFORCE cruise was conducted aboard L'ATALANTE with the objective of obtaining a large range of seismic images of different types of deep carbonate mounds like coral reefs, mud volcanoes or the diapirs associated with natural hydrocarbon emission in the Gulf of Cadiz. In all, nearly 3,050 km of multichannel seismic and 3,250 km of high resolution seismic profiles with 3.5 kHz CHEOPS were undertaken. The MOUNDFORCE cruise was part of the EUROMARGINS MOUNDFORCE project whose aim is to study deep carbonate structures and coral reefs associated with natural hydrocarbon emissions in seabeds of European Atlantic margins between Rockall Trough, Porcupine Bight and the Gulf of Cadiz. These deep sea carbonate edifices in this area are directly related to major oceanographic and climate upheavals, as well as to the interaction between Mediterranean waters and currents coming from the Arctic Ocean.
