Objectif Il est proposé de répéter une section hydrographique de 95 stations entre le Portugal et l'extrémité sud du Groenland tous les deux ans pendant 10 ans afin de déterminer les fluctuations à basse fréquence de la cellule méridienne de circulation océanique, du flux de chaleur vers l'Europe, du transport de traceurs et des caractéristiques des masses d'eau. La première réalisation de la section en 2002 a déjà mis en évidence une forte variabilité par rapport aux données de 1997, et la section de 2004 a conforté notre stratégie d'échantillonnage. Les mesures de la sonde CTDO2 sont complétées par la détermination de la teneur en sels nutritifs, traceurs anthropiques (CFCs, CCl4, carbone anthropique), d180 et 13C, et par des mesures de courant à l'aide de courantomètres acoustiques Doppler. Quatre mouillages courantométriques sur le talus Est Groenland ont été posé en juin 2004 et doivent être récupérés. Le programme Ovide s'appuie en outre sur l'analyse des données des profileurs lagrangiens du projet ARGO (16 profileurs seront déployés en 2006), un programme de modélisation réaliste à haute résolution (DRAKKAR) et d'assimilation variationnelle de données dans un modèle à plus basse résolution (OPA 1/3°). Le projet OVIDE fait partie du programme international CLIVAR et du programme national LEFE en collaboration avec les projets SURATLANTE (G. Reverdin).
