Objective | The proposal was to repeat a 95-station hydrographic section between Portugal and the southernmost tip of Greenland every two years for a 10 year period, in order to determine the low frequency fluctuations of the meridian circulation cell, heat fluxes towards Europe and tracer transport and characteristics of water masses. Achieving the first part of the section in 2002 had already showed up high variability compared to the data from 1997, and the 2004 section confirmed our choice of sampling strategy. CTDO2 probe measurements were complemented by determining the amounts of nutrients, anthropogenic tracers (CFCs, CCl4 and anthropogenic carbon), d180 and 13C, as well as by current measurements using ADCPs. Four current meter arrays were moored on the East Greenland slope in June 2004 and were to be recovered. The Ovide program is also based on analysis on the data from the ARGO project's Lagrangian profilers (16 were to be deployed in 2006), a realistic high resolution modeling program(DRAKKAR) and variational data assimilation in a lower resolution model (OPA 1/3°). OVIDE project is part of the international CLIVAR program and the French LEFE program, working in collaboration with SURATLANTE projects (G. Reverdin). |
