Objectif Circulation des masses d'eau dans le bassin oriental de la Méditerranée. The aim of the EGYPT (Eddies and GYres Paths Tracking) programme is to study the circulation of the water masses in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, poorly described due to the scarcity of in situ observations. The surface circulation especially was debated (a 'Mid-Mediterranean Jet' vs a counter-clockwise eastward circulation along the Libyan and Egyptian slopes). The objectives of the EGYPT-1campaign were to validate the circulation schema recently proposed by collecting in situ observations in the southern part of the basin, taking care of the mesoscale since it has a pivotal role. The strategy of EGYPT-1 relied i) on the reception aboard and analysis of the thermal satellite images in near real time to locate the mesoscale structures and position the CTD (XBT) transects (sampling interval ~3-10 miles), and ii) on collecting time series with eulerian (moorings) and lagrangian platforms (ARGO profilers and surface drifters). NB : The mooring network and CTD transects were originally planned off Egypt. But the authorization to work off the 12 miles was not granted (Egypt claims a EEZ 200 nautical miles wide), and operations had to be moved westward.
