Objectif

La surface de la Terre est modelée par l'action de paramètres physiques (température, pression, flux de matières) liés à la fois à des contrôles internes (convection mantellique, déformation de la croûte supérieure) et externes (écoulements de surfaces, courants océaniques, et atmosphériques). Les limites de plaques lithosphériques, comme en Nouvelle Zélande, sont des endroits où la dynamique interne (tectonique s.l.) est amplifiée. Depuis le début du Pléistocène, d'énormes quantités de sédiments sont produites en Nouvelle Zélande par l'action conjointe d'un fort taux de remontée tectonique et des changements climatiques abrupts, glaciaires/interglaciaires. Ces sédiments stockés dans les bassins sédimentaires adjacents à la limite de plaque ont enregistré cette activité qui peut être aisément observée et échantillonnée.

La campagne MATACORE sur le NO Marion Dufresne avait pour objectif de distinguer les contrôles tectoniques et climatiques sur l'évolution des surfaces continentales et terrestres, ainsi que les budgets sédimentaires le long le la marge Sud Ouest transformante et Nord Est en subduction de la Nouvelle Zélande. Les trois objectifs principaux étaient :

  • de contraindre les flux sédimentaires sur la marge active en subduction par la quantification des volumes sédimentaires qui ont été érodés le long de la chaîne axiale de l'Ile Nord de Nouvelle Zélande en surrection depuis 1.5 Ma, puis déposés par les systèmes fluviatiles sur dans les bassins périphériques du plateau continental tels que ceux de Hawkes Bay, Wanganui et Poverty Bay et dans l'océan profond ;
  • de reconstituer la succession des phénomènes gravitaires de type méga-avalanche (Ruatoria et Matakaoa) et coulée de débris par la datation des sédiments mis en place postérieurement, estimer leur fréquence de retour et établir une relation avec les grandes variations climatiques/eustatiques et/ou l'activité tectonique de la marge (séismes) ; de comprendre les mécanismes de déclenchement et de mise en place des grandes instabilités sous-marines par l'analyse des propriétés physiques des sédiments et l'étude de leur domaine de stabilité et des contraintes nécessaires pour générer une rupture, ainsi que par l'analyse des contraintes environnementales telles que les variations des apports sédimentaires au cours du temps ;
  • Enfin, d'identifier la réponse des masses d'eau profondes et intermédiaires aux changements climatiques rapides du passé pour identifier les grandes sources d'instabilités du système océan-atmosphère.
