Objective | Operationally the aims of the AUSFAIR survey were: (1) to recover giant (CALYSO) piston cores (and therefore pore water and head-space gas samples) from areas of seafloor in the Fairway and Capel basins that may, on the basis of a widespread BSR, be underlain by gas hydrate deposits, or underlain by ?salt diapirs; (2) to obtain heat-flow measurements in the Capel and Fairway basins, particularly in areas of likely movement of fluids, up faults, from deep within the basin; (3) to dredge basement and/or syn-rift rocks on the flanks of the Fairway Basin; (4) to obtain swath bathymetry, sub-bottom profiles, gravity and magnetic data over parts of the Lord Howe Rise, New Caledonia Basin, Middleton Basin, Dampier Ridge, Tasman Basin and the continental margin of eastern Australia. |
