Objective | The SantoBoa2006 cruise had two main objectives: (i) describe the diversity of bathyal fauna on the insular margins of Esperitu Santo island (Vanuatu) and (ii) continue the BOA project aiming to understand the origin and functioning of the wood fall or "sunken wood" ecosystem begun on the BOA0 cruise (Sept. 2004). The BOA project aims to understand (1) how the organic matter of wood is first decomposed, then mobilized in the food web; (2) the origin of organisms which are specifically associated with wood falls, compared to those of other reducing environments in the ocean (hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale carcass, etc.) and (3) the development constraints related to this environment, by analyzing the species population structure. The SantoBoa2006 cruise pursued work begun during the BOA1 cruise scheduled from 1-18 September 2005, and particularly to recover the planned experiment on immersed organic substrates. Tried and true sampling methods from previous cruises were to be used. Specimens would be fixed in alcohol or formaldehyde or frozen in liquid nitrogen, depending on how they were to be used on land. The 15-day cruise was to take place aboard RV ALIS, whose crew is well trained for this type of survey. The scientific team aboard is made up of 5 French researcher scientists (IRD, MNHN, University of Paris6) and an NI-Vanuatu observer. This request provides the benthic strand of the Santo2006 (Vanuatu) biodiversity workshop which aims to describe "every type of diversity, from the wave splash zone to the summit of the mountains" on Santo island. This falls under the BOA (under DiWood research group) and Santo2006 project. |
