Objectif

Le module marin de l'expédition s'inscrivait dans la continuité d'opérations similaires conduites précédemment en Nouvelle-Calédonie, aux Iles Australes et aux Philippines, couvrant le gradient de biodiversité récifale du Pacifique Sud, depuis le pôle "chaud" (Philippines) jusqu'au pôle "froid" (Iles Australes). Dans ce contexte, les objectifs du module marin de l'expédition SANTO 2006 étaient à la fois généraux et particuliers :

  • Objectif méthodologique : comment "mesure"-t-on la biodiversité d'un écosystème côtier complexe?

L'objectif méthodologique de SANTO 2006 était de comparer le pour et le contre de chacune des façons de "mesurer" la biodiversité des écosystèmes marins tropicaux, en déployant simultanément les trois approches à une échelle spatiale pertinente pour la conservation et la gestion des espaces :
(a) un inventaire taxonomique du type "chaque espèce compte" ;
(b) un échantillonnage quantitatif classique ;
(c) un Rapid Assessment Survey.

Rassembler les tenants des trois approches sur un même site permettra de partager idées et points de vues, et pourrait idéalement déboucher sur la mise au point de nouveaux protocoles de "mesure" de la biodiversité dans des environnements riches en espèces mais où l'expertise taxonomique est un facteur très limitant. 
Une précédente étude de site (Bouchet et al. 2002, Biol. J. Linn. Soc. 75: 421-436) a permis de réconcilier la force de l'approche naturaliste avec les mérites d'une stratégie d'échantillonnage standardisée. Le goulet d'étranglement taxonomique avait été contourné en utilisant des "morphospecies", sans essayer de mettre des noms d'espèces sur le petit macrobenthos. L'extension, par la même équipe, de la méthodologie à d'autres sites du Sud-Ouest Pacifique a montré que l'approche naturaliste peut être rendue réplicable, et ses résultats montrent des niveaux de richesse spécifique insoupçonnés par les autres approches.

 

  • Objectif particulier : inventorier un site et le situer dans le contexte du gradient de biodiversité du Pacifique Sud.

En choisissant un site dans l'archipel du Vanuatu, le projet SANTO 2006 avait pour objectif de mettre à niveau les connaissances sur la biodiversité récifale dans un archipel qui souffre d'un déficit d'études et d'inventaires par rapport à la Nouvelle-Calédonie voisinne. Les résultats obtenus devaient être comparés à ceux obtenus par la même équipe à Rapa, dans l'archipel des Australes (Polynésie française), qui représente le "pôle froid" du gradient de biodiversité, et à Koumac, Touho et Lifou (en Nouvelle- Calédonie), qui occupent une position intermédiaire. L'échelle spatiale des sites d'étude est celle du paysage (50-300 km²) et les taxons cibles sont des invertébrés benthiques peu mobiles (mollusques, crustacés décapodes).

Certains des résultats attendus du Projet SANTO, et de l'atelier de Biodiversité Marine SANTO 2006 en particulier relèvaient de la taxonomie (Exploration et connaissance de la biodiversité), d'autres relèvaient de la mise à niveau des collections de référence (Constitution de collections de nouvelle génération), d'autres enfin touchaient à la macroécologie (Structure de la guilde d'espèces).
