Objective

The BISSECOTE cruise was the data acquisition phase for a project devoted to using hyperspectral visible remote sensing to identify suspended or dissolved substances in coastal waters with little turbidity and on soft bottoms (sand, mud) in a coral environment. The measurement of inherent (absorption, diffusion, attenuation) and apparent (reflectance) optical properties of water masses and of some substrates were complemented by physical (CTD profiles, turbidity, in situ granulometry, acoustic characterization of seabeds) and biological (chlorophyll pigments, benthic biomass abundance) measurements to analyze these parameters' variability in lagoon environments. This analysis, based on modeling the radiative transfer, should provide improved inversion of the multi- or hyperspectral optical signal to be applied to ocean color or satellite data. The cruise was part of the BISSECOTE (biological and mineralogical analyses of spectral signatures in shallow coastal waters: applied to the southwestern lagoon of New Caledonia).
