Objective | The stakes of Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000, establishing a new framework for Community policy in the field of water and coastal ecosystem management. The Directive aims to achieve good ecological and chemical status of water masses in 2015, for coastal and transitional waters (e. g. estuaries, lagoons, brackish coastal ponds, etc.). The monitoring program's objectives are to enable the ecological status of coastal and transitional water masses to be assessed and contribute to defining quality objectives and the relevant programs for their quantification. The monitoring network was set up to assess water quality in the Rhone Mediterranean and Corsica districts relying on the RINBIO network's logistics (1996, 1998, 2000, 2003) for chemistry, while adding the measurement of hydrological and ecological parameters. The DCE 1 cruise provided information about the chemical and biological status of all of the water masses in the two districts. This included: 1) deploying artificial stations of mussels (RINBIO methodology) and sampling sediments to determine the levels of chemical contamination, 2) taking sediment samples to study the abundance and biomass of species based on the calculation of several indicators: species diversity, total density, diversity indices (Shannon index, etc.), 3) the degree of vitality and state of health of Posidonia beds: shoot density, meadow cover on bottom, proportion of plagiotrophic rhizomes and general description of the type of seagrass meadow. This multidisciplinary cruise enabled several scientific partners to work in association on the entire set of indicators chosen for the national-level working groups steered by the French Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable development. This falls under the DCE Mediterranean project. |
