Objective The objective of cruise, like the previous hake-tagging cruises, was to tag a large number of hake in the Bay of Biscay. These tagging cruises provide information about hake's growth, movements and mortality. The direct method for age validation (i.e., checking the periodicity of growth marks in hard tissues, particularly otoliths) is based on dual tagging: 1) internal tagging by injecting a vital marker and 2) conventional external tagging which enables the individual fish to be identified when re-caught by professional fishermen. In contrast to previous cruises, in 2006 we tested the insertion of an electronic marker in the abdominal cavity of 114 fish, providing continuous recording of temperature and pressure. This is related to the DEMOSTEM/ Strada project.
