Objective

The general objective of the MoMARETO cruise was to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities in the MoMAR zone located at the Azores triple junction. Meeting this objective depended on the developing of scientific instrumentation done in the framework of the European EXOCET/D project, whose final integration and technical validation phase was to be carried out during the 1st leg of this cruise. The approach proposed for the 2nd leg aimed to study hydrothermal species' response to their environment on two different time scales: one very short scale of response time of organisms to micro-variations (hours or days) of the environment and "observatory-type" time scale where assemblage dynamics will be linked to variations in their habitat over months to years. The data acquired during the cruise, backed up by previous studies in the zone, provide an essential basis for setting up an observatory in the MoMAR zone. MoMARETO falls under the framework of Ifremer's "GEODE" program. The first leg of the MoMARETO cruise was a crucial component of the EU EXOCET/D project (GOCE-CT-2003-505342) which financed the five vessel/submersible days. MoMARETO is more broadly part of the InterRidge MoMAR program. The following work areas were used: Rainbow (N36 deg 13,44' - W33 deg 54,10' - 2300 m) / Lucky Strike (N37 deg 17,29' - W32 deg 16,45' - 1700 m) / Menez Gwen (N37 deg 51,60' - W31 deg 31,30' - 850 m).
