Objectif L'objectif général du projet EGEE (Etude climatique et de la circulation océanique dans le Golfe de Guinée, volet océanographique du programme AMMA -Analyses Multidisciplinaires de la Mousson Africaine-) est l'étude de la variabilité dans les couches supérieures du Golfe de Guinée (GG). Il accorde une importance particulière aux échanges à l'interface océan-atmosphère, via l'exploitation conjointe de mesures in situ et satellitales et de résultats de modèles numériques, et aussi à la circulation océanique de sub-surface qui conditionne en grande partie l'évolution des couches de surface. En effet, la circulation océanique et sa variabilité dans la région orientale de l'océan Atlantique Tropical et leurs relations avec le climat des régions environnantes restent encore paradoxalement très peu connues. Il est déjà établi que l'intensité de la mousson, l'intensité des précipitations et leur répartition spatiale sur l'Afrique de l'Ouest dépendent des gradients méridiens d'énergie entre l'océan Atlantique (et plus particulièrement le GG) et les régions continentales (Afrique de l'Ouest). Ces gradients de couche limite sont conditionnés par les variables rencontrées en surface, tant continentales (albédo, végétation, état hydrique du sol) qu'océaniques (température de surface de la mer). Une des questions scientifiques prioritaires réside dans la compréhension des mécanismes qui régissent l'évolution de la température de surface de la mer (SST), de la salinité et de la couche de mélange ainsi que leur variabilité, aux échelles saisonnières à interannuelles. La compréhension et la simulation des échanges d'énergie à l'interface dépendent largement des paramétrisations, au même titre que celles de la convection ou des schémas de sol pour des modèles atmosphériques, qui sont particulièrement complexes et essentielles pour les études climatiques.
