Objectif

Les objectifs principaux de la campagne MD148-PECTEN (Past Equatorial Climate : Tracking El Niño) sont de reconstruire les variations passées du climat à différentes échelles de temps dans l'Océan Pacifique Equatorial Ouest. Quelques carottes de sédiment prélevées dans cette région ont contribué à mieux comprendre l'évolution du climat à l'échelle du million d'années, voire à celle de la dizaine de milliers d'années. Cependant, rien n'est encore connu des variations plus rapides du climat (10 à 1000 ans) dans cette zone. Or, les espaces à explorer au cours de cette mission doivent présenter de forts taux de sédimentation (compris entre 10 et 4000 centimètres par millier d'années). Les sédiments récoltés sont donc susceptibles de constituer des archives essentielles pour l'étude des climats passés.

La figure ci-dessous (Fig. 1) montre les objectifs de carottages donnés lors de la soumission du projet. La figure 2 montre les carottes qui ont été effectivement récoltées. On remarque que les la recherche de sites autours des Îles Salomon n'a pas été fructueuse. Les carottes récoltées con- tenaient un sable à foraminifères indiquant un fort vannage des sédiments.
