Objective | Observing and understanding seasonal, annual and decadal variations in the ocean carbon cycle are essential in order to estimate carbon budgets on a global scale (in the framework of the Kyoto protocol) and parameterize then validate predictive climate models (IPCC framework). The S.O. OISO (Indial Ocean observation service) whose cruises are made aboard the Marion-Dufresne (IPEV) aims to study the variability over time and space of the oceanic CO2 cycle, the related air-sea exchanges of CO2 as well as detect anthropogenic CO2 in the ocean and analyze its ten-year trends in subtropical, subAntarctic and southern ocean zones. All the cruises were scheduled in the southern Indian Ocean and its corresponding Antarctic sector. Internationally speaking, especially in terms of knowledge about CO2 air-sea flow on a global scale and anthropogenic CO2 inventories, OISO observations complement the measurements taken in other ocean sectors (Pacific, Atlantic, tropical zones) by foreign partners (Australia, Japan, the UK, the US, etc.). Since 2003, the S.O. OISO and the MINERVE programme conducted aboard the Astrolabe (Tasmania-Adelie Land trip) have been joined in the framework of the Environmental research observatory ORE/CARAUS (austral carbon). The OISO-12 cruise was associated with the MD145/KEOPS mission (Project leader was S. Blain/COM/Marseille). The related programmes are: international programmes: WCRP/CLIVAR, IGBP/SOLAS, IGBP/IMBER. National programmes: PROOF, PNEDC and PATOM. |
