Objective | Main objective: The focus here is on climate signal pathways taken in the South Pacific Ocean. The Secalis cruises were devoted to studying water masses feeding into the Coral Sea and particularly the especially intense stream currents produced by interaction between the large scale South Equatorial current and the topographic events of the Fidji Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. These cruises fall under the international 'SPICE' (South PacIfic Climate Experiment) project being set up. Secondary objective: Deploying a SPRAY glider" loaned by the Scripps Institution to sample the Salomon/New Caledonia section. Climate variations over large time scales are a vital priority for major research organizations (www.clivar.org). SECALIS were driving forces in getting the SPICE underway, devoted to studying Southwest Pacific circulation in the framework of the CLIVAR programme. |
