Objective | Biodiversity of the macrophytobenthos (seaweed and marine phanerogams) and the main zoological groups (Sponges, Ascidians, Echinodermata) in coral formations in the Loyalty islands, the Durand reef to the south and the Astrolabe reef to the north of the archipelago. - Pharmaco-chemistry: looking for active marine substances in sponges and ascidians to supplement previous missions in the area. The cruise falls under the Biodiversity of tropical marine fauna and flora (IRD-UMR 7138 "Systematics, Adaptation, Evolution") and pharmaco-chemistry (IRD UMR 152) programmes. Comments on the cruise's progression: Access to the study area presented no difficulty. Preliminary steps taken by the Fisheries service of the Loyalty islands Province of New Caledonia to contact all the chiefs of tribes in areas neighboring the study zone. Boat (L'ALIS's tender): not quite seaworthy enough to take four divers, the surface supervisor and the pilot (in accordance with regulations) and ensure safety during transits to study sites. |
