Objective | Recovery of tide gauge, temperature and salinity data from 2 SBE 26 tide gauges set up on Banc Sabine and on the Wusi reef. Maintenance of instruments. Recovery of temperature loggers placed at Banc Sabine. Landing at Wusi to recover data from permanent GPS combined with a weather station. Exhibition material for the AUF was left at the Alliance Française at Luganville. Diagnosis and troubleshooting. The MAREVA mission follows on from the MOTEVAS project (on vertical tectonic movements using satellite altimetry) aiming to study vertical co-seismic and inter-seismic movements in the ocean on either side of the central New Hebrides subduction zone. Vertical movements were measured by adding tide gauge heights and sea surface altimetric heights. Two sites were chosen: -Banc Sabine (whose name will be used for the various missions at sea for this project), on the plunging plate and on an ERS- ENVISAT altimeter track (near a crossing point) - the Wusi reef, on the overlying margin, at the nadir of a TOPEX/POSEIDON pass. The project was selected in the CNES/NASA AO for JASON satellite pilot projects. Deploying tide gauges in the region will extend the realm of applications for measurements. Four other projects will use these measurements: a project to calibrate ENVISAT and T/P altimeters (C. K. Shum); - a project to study mean sea levels (A. Cazenave), - one to monitor the El Nino phenomenon (T. Delcroix), - and a study of the global tide (C. Le Provost). |
