Objective | The BIOZRECUP2 cruise followed a series of 6 cruises previously conducted since 2000 on the Congo-Angola margin, which aimed to study the functioning of various deep benthic ecosystems in relation to their environment (hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry, sedimentology, etc.) on several "worksites" in the region. Both the multidisciplinary nature of this programme and the study of variability over time meant that this series of cruises was needed to avoid too isolated data which could not be interpreted. The cruises included putting long-term (particle traps, current meters turbidimeters) moorings into place in order to study the variability of particulate matter inputs related to the hydrodynamic conditions on the margin in the vicinity of the shelf channel of the Zaire river. This channel is where turbiditic events take place, leading to significant inputs of particulate organic matter channelled by the valley. The Biozrecup2 cruise recovered six moorings deployed during the Biozaire3 cruise (late 2003 - early 2004). These studies were the "Biozaire" strand of the "Impact, benthic ecosystems" project which was itself part of the "mineral and energy resources, sedimentary processes and impact on ecosystems" programme of Ifremer's Exploration and Exploitation of Ocean floors theme. |
