Objective The objective of the MERMED34 cruise was to catch hake and their principal prey to meet the objectives of the 'Hake food chain' sub-project of the Integrated Mediterranean programme (PIM), the national coastal ecology programme (PNEC) and the SYSCOLAG regional programme. The biological samples taken during this cruise were used to define hake's diet in the autumn period, compare the results with those of the previous year, and complement knowledge about the chemical contamination level in various components, at each level of its trophic network, in order to establish a bioaccumulation model. The 3 following work areas were used: Zone 1: N43 deg 24.000 - E004 deg 13.000 / N43 deg 18.000 - E004 deg 59.000 / N43 deg 16.000 - E004 deg 06.000 / N43 deg 10.000 - E004 deg 52.000 *** Zone 2: N43 deg 21.000 - E003 deg 43.000 / N43 deg 19.000 - E003 deg 48.000 / N43 deg 09.000 - E003 deg 23.000 / N43 deg 08.000 - E003 deg 29.000 *** Zone 3: N43 deg 10.000 - E003 deg 52.000 / N43 deg 01.000 - E004 deg 13.000 / N42 deg 59.000 - E003 deg 24.000 / N42 deg 51.000 - E003 deg 49.000. 2 doctoral theses were in progress: FERRATON Franck (2003-2006) Structure and dynamics of food webs up to young hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lion: effect of Rhone inputs and influence on fisheries. School of doctoral studies in ecology of continental aquatic systems, Montpellier II - Cofinanced by IFREMER and the Languedoc-Roussillon region, SYSCOLAG programme. BODIGUEL Xavier (2004-2007) Modeling bioaccumulation or persistant organic contaminants in the food web of hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Mediterranean. - Languedoc university of sciences and techniques, Montpellier II, Cofinanced by IFREMER and the Languedoc-Roussillon region, (SYSCOLAG programme) (supervised by V. Loizeau, Professor C. Casellas, faculty of pharmacology).
