| Summary of measurements |
- -Monitoring the Bay of Vilaine nursery (target species: common sole), series begun in 1981 and done almost annually,
following a standard protocol.
-Apart from juvenile soles' situation (age class of the year and the previous year), a comprehensive analysis was made of the population, including all ichtyofauna and the related benthic invertebrate macrofauna.
-The study site was the bay and the mouth of the Vilaine (average point 47° 24'N, 02° 38'W) with 4 biosedimentary strata on bottoms between 2m and 30 m. The protocol was followed and 42 fifteen-minute hauls with beam trawls were made.
-8 additional hauls with otter boards were made to sample otoliths (establishing the size-weight ratio of sole and complementing the information on fisheries stocks on Haploops bottoms in the mudflat bordering the nursery).
-In terms of abundance, the year class numbers were clearly higher than those of 2004 (mean densities of 107 ind./ha compared to 60 in 2004), but much lower than those of 2003 (224 ind./ha).
-The impact of the drought was seen in the very low growth of the group 0 at the end of the first summer. The modal size of group 0 was 9.5 cm, i.e. about 20 to 30% less than in the previous 4 years (Same thing was true for the group 0 of plaice).
