Objective The specific object of this second in a series of annual cruises was to tag a large number of hake in the Bay of Biscay. These tagging surveys provide information about hake's growth, movements and mortality. The direct method for age validation (i.e., checking the periodicity of growth marks are hard tissues, particularly otoliths) is based on dual tagging 1) internal tagging by injecting a vital marker, and 2) conventional external tagging which enables the individual fish to be identified when recaught by professional fishermen.
