Objective

The ESMERALDAS cruise (14 March - 7 April) aimed to examine the structure and shape of the contact area of the two plates, where very large seisms began, to a depth of 30 to 50 km. The Esmeraldas-Tumaco site, straddling the Equator and Colombia, was selected. The sector was affected by four very large scale historic quakes. The submarine seismological stations were constructed by the IRD and deployed by L'Atalante. The seismic source used (eight 16 liter Bolt Air-Guns, fired every 150m) was entirely satisfactory (over 18,000 shots). The full network, made up of some fifty underwater (26) and land-based (28) station also worked to our satisfaction. Interpreting the signals recorded will provide a true 3D active tomography of the sector. The network will then be maintained until 2005 to record natural seismicity, revealing the accumulation of constraints in the area. This will be used for a 3D active tomography to supplement the active tomography and the analysis of the constraints regime for the sector.
