Objective | MELISSA's main objective is to better understand the causal relationships between chemical forcings input to ocean systems (essentially the availability of nutrient substances) and the functioning of the foodweb. The MELISSA cruises proposed investigations on availability of nutrient substances in the layer exposed to light, the concomitant changes in the trophic system (phytoplanktonic dynamics) and the consequences on carbon fluxes. Field observations (DYFAMED site) combined with in vitro studies: chemical analysis of stocks (nutrients, dissolved iron, dissolved organic matter), measurements of new production and regenerated production, study of assimilation processes (particularly diazotrophy). This falls under the PROOF project. The following dates were days at sea: 25 January, 24 February, 30 March, 25 April, 27 May, 1st July, 31st July, 31st August, 18 September, 14 October and 15 December. The site is located in the central part of the Ligurian Sea. The reference point is located at 123 of Cap Ferrat, 28 nautical miles away from this cape (ie, precisely at 43 deg 25,400' N and 07 deg 51,800' E. |
