Objective | Mesoscale study of ichtyoplankton (fish larvae), plankton and avifauna on the continental shelf betwee the Mertz glacier and Dumont d'Urville. The related programs are CEASIZ and SCAR. The protocol for working zones consisted in positioning sampling stations along the trajectories of Adelie penguins given by Argos beacons (data received at Chizé by Charles André Bost). The positioning for the ten paths taken by penguins was recovered daily and mapped aboard "l'Astrolabe" using an Arcview 3 geographic information system. This made it possible to develop a sampling plan to study the ocean environment linked to the penguins' feeding grounds. Samples were taken along a network of coast/offshore transects between the Astrolabe glacier and the Mertz glacier. |
